In year 1 we have been looking at the beginnings of multiplication. We counted in repeated groups of two using equipment and pictorial representations eg. pairs of socks. In literacy we did some role play in role as Hoot Owl and the other characters in the story. We then thought of some new disguises for Hoot Owl to help him catch other animals. In Art we collected some leaves and looked carefully at the different shapes to make observational drawings of the leaves.
We’ve had a busy week in year 2. In literacy we have written stories about The Dark and published them into real books! (See Twitter for photos) We learnt all about money in numeracy, adding different amounts, getting familiar with the coins and today we set up shops selling classroom resources and practised finding the right coins to make a total amount. In Science we made a class book with ideas for how to help our world and we wrote haiku about planet Earth and published them on some beautiful watercolour paintings!
In year 3 this week, we have been using our senses to describe life in The Stone Age. In Maths we have been using known multiplication facts to work out unknown facts like 2 x 3 = 6 and 20 x 3 = 60. We have also multiplied teen numbers by partitioning. In history we have been finding out about what early man discovered and what skills were used in different periods of The Stone Age.
In Year 4 this week the children have explored the characters from Krindlekrax, focusing on their relationships. They have used the text to find evidence to support their ideas. They have continued to focus on multiplication in maths, practising the grid method to multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers. In Topic the children have been learning about the Viking raid on Lindisfarne and have been writing a diary entry from the point of view of an Anglo Saxon monk.
This week has been a very different learning experience for year 5 teachers and staff as we have been learning using Zoom. In numeracy we have been looking at factors, common factors and prime numbers. In literacy we have started our new book, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. We have been writing a description of Scrooge. In history we had a brief look at Camberwell in Victorian Times. For science we started our new topic on ‘forces’.
We have had another successful week of online learning in Year 6. Continuing with our Suffragette unit in Literacy, we learnt about Emily Wilding Davison who tragically lost her life campaigning for women’s rights and wrote a TV news report, reporting on the events of that day. As the fight for women’s suffrage was worldwide, we also looked at other women around the world who made significant contributions to the movement. During numeracy, we practised using the order of operations (BIDMAS) and algebraic expressions. We continued our unit on World War 2; designed our own Anderson Shelters and learnt about the adventures of evacuee children.
